ASSESSMENTS FOR FEDERAL & STATE JUDGES
We believe that when a Judge undergoes an assessment, it signals the beginning of a shift in their lives.
Acumen Assessments offers a variety of evaluation services for U.S. District Court and State judges aimed at assessing difficulties and/or concerns raised by others.
Acumen Assessments is an international provider of specialty assessments for professionals who have authority over, and shoulder significant responsibilities to, the public. We work with the Federal Judiciary and have evaluated and coached Federal Judges where behavioral problems (anger and/or boundary problems) or ethical lapses are associated with temperament, personality, depression, anxiety, difficult life circumstances, or cognitive decline. We can evaluate and address substance use disorders as well.
We conduct multidisciplinary assessments with adherence to a process that takes into account multiple levels of analysis to increase the validity of our conclusions and recommendations. In order to reduce biases at different levels of analysis, our sound multidisciplinary evaluations are focused on three goals: 1) to help preserve the safety and integrity of those whom the judge serves within their professional capacity (i.e., the public and those in the courthouse/chambers; 2) to help the judge and others involved gain a clear understanding of their predicament; and 3) to define a causal explanation for the presenting problem that links directly to recommendations for intervention(s), if indicated.
The difficulties that lead to an assessment can vary widely:
-
Distress and disruption in the workplace
-
Sexual harassment, misconduct, and boundary violations
-
Substance use disorders
-
Negative personality traits that are impinging upon others in the workplace
-
Ethical lapses
-
Undiagnosed or insufficiently treated psychiatric disorders
-
Difficulties with professional role functioning and ethical-reputational risk management
-
Challenges associated with aging (i.e., cognitive problems, burnout, etc.)
The costs associated with our evaluations vary depending on the scope and type of evaluation needed. Usually, we consult with the referring party and the judge to determine the internal and collateral resources that will be needed to conduct a proper assessment.
